The goals strived for with treatments of vaginal warts are aimed at eliminating the actual wart. Doing this will hopefully eliminate or alleviate the physical and emotional symptoms that also plague the patient. The sooner the treatment of the physical symptoms such as the as the actual lesion, itching, discharge, and irritation that can come form having vaginal warts is acted upon – the sooner the emotional healing can begin as well. Most treatments available are wart destructive since we are only just learning to combat the virus itself.

Treatments for vaginal warts can be summed up in three ways:
#1. Receiving no treatment at all for vaginal warts.
#2. Vaginal wart treatments applied by the patient at home.
#3. Vaginal wart treatments applied in a doctor’s office, an out patient facility or in the hospital.

Please understand that #1 should really not be considered an option at all.
Vaginal warts left untreated will do one of four things:
#1. The vaginal warts may possibly resolve themselves – this is highly unlikely.
#2. The vaginal warts may remain unchanged – also very unlikely.
#3. The vaginal warts my change in size – very likely as the surrounding tissue is infected.
#4. The vaginal warts may increase in number – highly likely especially in women.

Vaginal wart treatments can range from a simple office visit for a topical application, to actual inpatient hospitalization. Looking to avoid such extremes here is an in depth look at treatment for vaginal warts.

Podophyllin – this vaginal wart treatment is done by a physician in the office and is only used on external vaginal warts. Podophyllin is derived from a plant extract. It is applied directly to the vaginal wart and acts as poison to the human cells that make up the vaginal wart. Podophyllin actually interrupts the natural growth of skin cells and must be washed off no more than four hours after application or it will continue it’s job of acting as poison and continue to burn the skin. You may need to go multiple times to the doctor’s office or clinic to have the podophyllin applied. Remember taking care of vaginal warts is a course of action, not a onetime thing. The side affects of podophyllin are only revealed if the individual has been exposed to too much of it. Podophyllin can affect your entire body and over exposure can bring about severe skin irritation, dizziness, confusion and possible damage to the nervous system. Some experts do not recommend the use of this chemical as a treatment for vaginal warts at all and, as you would expect, it is not for use during pregnancy. Rate of recurrence following treatment with podophyllin is estimated at 40%-60%.

Podophyllotoxin solution – this treatment for vaginal warts is sold under the brand name Condyline (from the word Condyloma or wart). It is the active ingredient in Podophyllin and it is manufactured in a way that makes it safe to use at home but well standardized preparations are not available. It seems every “batch” may be a bit different. However, it is a convenient method of treatment for vaginal warts because it does not even need to be washed off. This treatment for vaginal warts is applied at home, twice a day for three days. Then the patient will not use it for four days to give the areas being treated a rest.

The three day on – four day off regimen may be repeated for up to four weeks. The rate of recurrence is vast, anywhere from 10%-90% but that is the way of the wart virus, it is very tricky.

Imiquimod – this treatment for vaginal warts is sold under the brand name Aldara. It is a new type of treatment for vaginal warts called an immune response modifier. It is a cream that is applied at home at bedtime, every other day, three times a week. The cream must be washed off in eight to ten hours. It is for use on external warts only and the side affects most experienced are itching, burning, open sores, some pain. This discomfort could also include headaches, fatigue and muscle and abdominal cramps. Imiquimod works by stimulating the immune system to release important disease fighting chemicals in our bodies called cytokines. Cytokines fight viruses and destroy cancer cells. The major cytokine being released by imiquimod is called interferon which then activates Langerhans cells (immune cells) that are responsible for killing the now virus infected cells enhancing your body’s response to reduce the virus reproduction. This treatment not for use for pregnant women. Imiquimod treatment seems to present between a 10%- 20% of recurrence but there are additional studies ongoing to confirm these numbers.

Interferon – this treatment for vaginal warts is an antiviral agent. Interferon is injected into the vaginal warts directly after a topical anesthetic has been applied or injected. This vaginal wart treatment is only used on those individuals that have not responded to other treatments. Interferons are a group of proteins that are normally produced by cells in response to viral infections and were named for their ability to “interfere” with replicating viruses. Those with liver problems should be monitored while under therapies including interferon. The interferon received by injection for treatment of vaginal warts is usually a synthetic man-made version of these recombinant proteins but can still produce some side affects similar to flu-like symptoms but these seem to diminish as the treatment progresses. To have these injections the patient would be watched after treatment and closely monitored for any adverse side affects. Interferon is an extreme treatment for vaginal warts and is considered when all other therapies have been exhausted. A topical type of application of interferon has not been proven overly effective for treatment of vaginal warts.

5-flouracil/epinephnrine-gel – this vaginal wart treatment is referred to as a gel “implant”. It is mixture with a stabilizing agent and injected into the genital skin, near the warts. This treatment is such an extreme for treatment of genital warts it can result in very painful erosions in the skin and produce immense scarring. 5 flouracil/epinephrine-gel is not at all recommended for any sort of routine treatment of genital warts and is not, in any situation or stage of vaginal warts, used pregnant women. This treatment for vaginal warts is not even licensed for use in some areas. Recurrence rate percentages are not available because this treatment is so rarely used.

5-flouracil cream – this vaginal wart treatment is sold under the name Efudix and is currently a treatment provided only by a specialist because it is a highly toxic agent, which is to say – it destroys abnormal cells. It can produce erosions that are very painful and again is not used in routine treatment of vaginal warts or pregnant women. Recurrence rate percentages are not available because it is so rarely used.

Curettage and scissor or scalpel excisions – this treatment for vaginal warts is usually used as one of the last resorts used to rid the body of vaginal warts. This treatment is direct removal of the actual vaginal wart by cutting away the tissue. This vaginal wart treatment is also used if the lesions are quite large and if the physician can get to them. The doctor will use diathermy (heat or burning) to stop the bleeding. Pain is highly likely and larger lesions will probably leave scarring in this procedure. Diathermy - is also another name for electrocautery and this, in itself, is another vaginal wart treatment to actually take the wart off of the body entirely, unless surrounding tissue is also infected and not treated and could possibly re-infect the patient.
One of the stresses of diathermy (electrocautery) in any vaginal wart treatment is the smell of the burning flesh and some doctors will advise a bit of aroma therapy to avoid upsetting the patient during the burning and treatment of vaginal warts. This could even be the pleasant scent of the patient’s favorite perfume on a hanky will assist in avoiding the fumes which may upset patients. For men – there is the smell of a good men’s fragrance or even fruit scents to ease the senses.

LEEP – This acronym stands for Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure and it is a vaginal wart treatment in which a fine wire loop attached to a high frequency electrical generator allows for removal of abnormal tissue from the cervix. LEEP is very precise and does not do damage to tissue surrounding the vaginal wart. The procedure seals the blood vessels in the area treated. The patient must lie very still and a local anesthetic is injected into the site of treatment. When the generator is humming and treatment is occurring and the patient must not move – the tissue removal then takes just a few seconds and like in other vaginal wart treatments the vessels are sealed off with burning or heat to lessen bleeding. A solution called “Monsel’s Solution” is also applied to assist in the bleeding – it is sort of a green paste. The paste will cause a brownish-black discharge from the vagina for a few days after the procedure. There are few risks with LEEP and usually no “in-patient” time for the person receiving treatment. As with other vaginal wart treatments follow up is essential.

Treatment for vaginal warts is extremely important because it is thought that vaginal warts left untreated or undetected bring on most cervical cancers. There is no blood test that can check for human papillomavirus, the virus that causes vaginal and genital warts. There are antibody tests that are performed after your body has had time to develop the antibodies (cells that fight infections) to the antigen (the invader, in this case HPV) but this does not happen overnight. Building antibodies for accurate testing can take up to 3 months to accumulate enough of the antibody for detection. Only a small percentage of people with vaginal warts develop genital cancers, other factors such as cigarette smoking, drug use, risky or unsafe sexual lifestyle and immune system health must also be taken into consideration.

Oils that enhance T cell activity - (Helper Cells) can assist in the healing that will take place after most of these treatments for vaginal warts.
