Valacyclovir (val-ay-SYE-kloe-veer) is used to treat the symptoms of herpes zoster or shingles, a herpes virus infection of the skin; it is also used to treat and in some cases prevent genital herpes outbreaks. It has also shown effectiveness in treating oral herpes or cold sores; Valtrex has become the anti-herpes medicine. Although Valtrex will not cure shingles or genital herpes, it does help relieve the pain and discomfort and helps the sores heal faster.

Valtrex works best if it is used within the first 48 hours after the first symptoms of shingles or genital herpes begin to appear. These symptoms may include itching, burning and the appearance of lesions. For recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes, Valtrex works best if it is used within 24 hours after the symptoms begin to appear.

Valtrex may be taken with meals.

Keep taking Valtrex for the full time of treatment, even if your symptoms begin to clear up after a few days. Do not miss any doses. However, it is recommended that you do take higher doses of Valtrex or for an extended period of time unless this has been discussed with your doctor ordered.

The dose of Valtrex will be differing from patient to patient. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. Your dosage may be different if you have kidney disease or liver problems. If your dose is different from the average recommended dosage, do not change it unless your own health care provider tells you to do so.

Although Valtrex is considered to be the gold standard in prescription therapy, consider the use of H-Balm. H-Balm has proven affective in treating herpes outbreaks at nearly a ¼ of the cost of prescription medication. It has all been recommended by some Herpes sufferers to use H-Balm in addition to Valtrex. Let your prescription work from the inside while the H-Balm takes care of the lesions from the outside.
