I purchased this product because it was said to eliminate warts. I used this product on a genital wart and the wart was gone within 24 hours. My 7 year old son developed two warts in the area behind his right ear. Both were larger than a pencil eraser, and growing fast. A small number of children will grow up without ever having developed one or two flat warts, which are benign skin growths caused by organisms known as human papilloma viruses. The most common type of wart is a raised, roughly textured growth that starts out skin-colored and progressively turns yellow to gray. Appearing singly or in clusters, these warts vary in size from a pinhead to a large mass. They usually occur on the fingers, hands, face, knees and elbows, although they can spread anywhere.

Flat warts (Verruca Vulgaris) are a benign skin tumors caused by a common virus. The virus responsible for flat warts is called human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts may appear as skin-colored, flat or slightly raised lesions. These are not cancerous, but may be contagious. Warts may be found in any age group and are most common in a younger population.

Plantar warts, which are similar to common flat warts, develop on the sole of the foot and are flat rather than raised because of the pressure from weight.

Closely related to the most common warts are juvenile flat warts, which are smooth, slightly elevated and variable in color from pink to brown. Juvenile flat warts are usually less than a quarter-inch in size, and they appear primarily on the face and hands.

Scientists have identified more than fifty different types of human papilloma viruses, several of which are associated with specific types of warts like flat warts. Like other viruses, papilloma viruses are transmitted from person to person, usually through close physical contact or, less often, sharing of personal items, such as towels. The viruses responsible for flat warts can also be spread from one part of the body to another, which is why flat warts on the fingers often lead to flat warts in other locations, including the face. Children's natural tendency to pick at warts also promotes the virus spread.

Some people get flat warts depending on how often they are exposed to the virus. Flat warts occur more easily if the skin has been damaged or traumatized in some way, which explains the high frequency in people who bite their nails or pick at their cuticles. Some people are just more likely to contract flat warts than others, just like some people catch colds more easily than others do. Weakened immune systems, lack of adequate rest, poor nutrition, increased stress and close living quarters can also contribute to catching the wart virus.

More than fifty percent of warts disappear spontaneously within two years. However, failure to treat flat warts increases the risk that they will spread. Therefore, it is recommended that a pediatrician see the lesions and determine whether therapy is needed and, if so, what kind.

The basic approach to home treatments involves peeling the wart off. Consult with your doctor about wart-removal products sold over the counter. The active ingredients of these products can destroy the upper layer of the skin. Therefore, never allow a child to apply a wart-removal product alone, and make sure you apply these remedies only to the wart, not to surrounding skin. Follow package directions, which usually recommend twice daily applications. Alternatively, your doctor may recommend a prescription wart-removal solution or plaster that you can use at home.

Never attempt to cut off a wart; only a physician should perform this procedure.

Some of the most common ways in which flat warts are removed are:

Cryotherapy (freezing) is generally preferred. This treatment is not too painful and rarely results in scarring. However, repeat treatments at two to three week intervals are often necessary for complete resolution. plantar warts are some of the most difficult to treat because the bulk of the wart lies below the skin surface. Treatments may include the use of salicylic acid plasters, bichloracetic acid, liquid nitrogen or a combination of these products. There is usually little discomfort but it can take many weeks of treatment and consistency to obtain favorable results. A change in footwear may be recommended to reduce pressure on the warts or reduce foot sweating. Flat warts are often too widespread to treat with the above mentioned methods. As a result, a method known as peeling which uses daily applications of salicylic acid or other surface peeling preparations are often recommended and used.

Another method is liquid nitrogen. A clear blister or blood blister may form after treatment with liquid nitrogen. Do not at any time purposely break the blister. This will increase the chance for infection. Keep the area clean and dry. Hands and feet should be washed and dried thoroughly. Wear white cotton socks and comfortable leather shoes.

Many people, patients and doctors alike, believe folk remedies and hypnosis are effective. Since warts may disappear without treatment, it's hard to know whether it was the folk remedy or just the passage of time that led to the cure. Since warts are generally harmless, there may be times where these treatments are appropriate. Medical treatments can always be used if necessary.

With flat warts and other common warts being so wide spread, it is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize exposure to the virus. This could make you or your children one of very few that live without ever having developed warts.
