Digene hpv Test
The Digene hpv Test is the only DNA-based test for hpv (human papillomavirus) that is currently sold in the U.S. HPV accounts for most cases of cervical cancer found in women. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women. In the US, it is responsible for approximately 12,900 new cases and 4,100 deaths each year. Pap smear tests combined with the Digene HPV test done regularly is crucial in detecting the cancer in its early stages. Early detection of such cellular changes may mean a difference between life and death. In cases where you believe you may be of higher risk of cancer causing HPV, you should request the Digene HPV test in combination with your Pap test. The Pap test reveals abnormal cancer cells. A Pap test done alone without a test such as the Digene HPV test does not reveal human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus that causes cervical cancer. A standard Pap test alone does not determine the risk for developing cervical disease.
Fortunately, we do have access tests such as the Digene HPV Test that is typically used as a follow up to an abnormal (or ASCUS) Pap smear and can now detect HPV in cervical cells and tissues. The Digene HPV Test, has been approved by the FDA as a secondary measure of testing and can indicate the presence of HPV even before there are visible cell changes occur as well as identify the type of HPV present as low or high risk. The Digene HPV Test identifies a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer and in turn, which patients need more careful monitoring by their physician in addition to receiving regular Pap tests.
HPV is affecting people around the world in epidemic proportions. The need is now more than ever for women all over the world, to be informed about HPV, the risks and the availability of HPV testing with tests like the Digene HPV test. There are many websites who have devoted websites and personal efforts to educate women on this particular health concern.
Certainly with HPV reaching such epidemic proportions it is not feasible to consider HPV testing for everyone, however, through proper and regular Pap tests and the availability of the Digene HPV test, a handle can be had on the control of the high-risk types and reduce the mortality rates that exist as the result of the more vicious types.
Unfortunately a test such as the Digene HPV test does not exist for cases of male HPV infections. Know that standard screening does not include herpes, HPV or HIV. All of these must be requested. To date there are only affective HPV tests such as the Digene HPV test that can detect HPV in women. However, an old method used by old school doctors and not actually recognized by the FDA as an affective method is the vinegar method. Men who suspect an HPV infection can try this method, keeping in mind that it may or may not be efficient. Simply take some paper towels and soak them in white vinegar. Wrap the saturated towels around the shaft of the penis for a few minutes. Upon removing the towels if white spots are visible, that could be an indication of existing presence of HPV. Although it is certainly not a scientifically proven testing method like the Digene HPV test, it is one small measure that can be taken to provide a minor peace of mind when considering an infection of STDs.
