Illness Shingles
Illness shingles is an ailment caused by the same virus varicella, or chickenpox virus that can affect children but it is most common in adults and people over the age of fifty. Illness shingles comes from the same family of the herpes virus that if reactivated can spread through the part of the nervous cells along with the spinal column. Illness shingles that appear on the upper part of the face is rare and it is dangerous as it can affect the eyes and in worst cases can lead to temporary or permanent blindness. Illness shingles cannot be triggered if you have contact with someone who has chickenpox. People with history of chicken pox already have varicella-zoster virus in their nerve cells where it may lie dormant for decades and once activated, the virus travels along the path of a nerve to the skin's surface, where it begins to reproduce into blisters and breakouts. People affected by illness shingles will experience itching and tingling sensation, numbness, and pain in the parts of their body before the rashes or blisters appear. It is difficult to diagnose illness shingles during pre-eruption stage. It could be mistakenly diagnosed for kidney problems, gallstone, pleurisy, appendicitis, or even a heart attack. That is why seek medical attention if symptoms persist.
Other initial symptoms of illness shingles include fever, chilling, nausea; diarrhea and malaise that will develop in 4 to 4 days after the blister appear. The virus travels at nerve path and could route to any skin and would appear on the face, chest or on one side of the body. Illness shingles is accompanied with chest pain, if it attacks the chest and abdominal pain if it occurs in the abdomen area and other areas affected.
It is extremely important to diagnose illness shingles as soon as initial symptoms come out in order to start the treatment as early as possible. Medications for illness shingle include topical ointments, antiviral drugs, pain relievers, antidepressants anticonvulsants and steroids. These treatments if done at the early stage can shorten the duration and control spread of illness shingles to other parts of the body. There are various complications associated with illness shingles. If symptoms persist it could lead to chronic painful condition called Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) that can be difficult to treat. If the virus travels to the nerve path leading to the eyes, it could develop corneal ulceration and may cause chronic pain and discomforts and may lead to loss of vision. Illness shingles could easily affect those suffering from stress and depression, HIV positive patients, alcoholics, organ transplant, those undergoing chemotherapy or other cancer treatments and those people with weak immune systems.
It is easy to diagnose illness shingles if rashes are visible. Diagnosis may include blood tests. Blister fluid culture and also skin biopsy in some cases. Typical home therapy includes washing the blisters and leave it open (no bandage is needed), applying cold compress to relive pain, or soaking blister in water mixed with cornstarch and oatmeal. They key to prevent illness shingles to recur is to maintain a healthy immune system.
