It’s hard to tell if dogs have canine nail fungus by a mere glance. If you look at the dog’s feet you may not see the difference not until you look at it carefully. The canine nail fungus in dogs can be caused by the fungal organism (Blastomyces dermatitidis) that usually resides in the moist environment. These organisms are found in molds in the sandy soils and waterways that are frequented by these dogs. Not all dogs can have canine nail fungus but those types of dogs that are used for hunting and sports that traverse these types of environment often caught the micro organisms at the right timing and get infected with canine nail fungus.

The canine nail fungus is mostly found in male dogs. Male dogs are more vulnerable to getting infected with canine nail fungus than female dogs for some unknown reasons. The canine nail fungus infection is also linked to the dog habits of licking. Excessive licking can cause skin problems that could affect their feet and toes. The bacteria that the dog has on the other parts of the body can spread to other parts and could develop into some problems in their feet and toes.

The problem of dogs having canine nail fungus infection is also attributed to poor diet or lack of essential nutrients that will take care of the development and maintaining good skin and nails. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies is a great factor in the dog’s health because it also affects their immune systems.

Consequently the canine nail fungus is dependent on the dog’s immune system.
It is always important that any abnormal changes in the dog’s toes should be reported to the veterinarian. It is important to seek treatment as early as possible to make your dog’s feet and toes healthy again. You can take your dog to the Vet for a check up and advice about the food that are supposed to be given to them. Practice good hygiene with your dog by doing a regular bath. When you go outside in the damp soil environment wash and rinse the feet of your dog. Even just a plain rinsing of the dog's feet after you stepped outside of your house might help.
