Molluscum contagiosum is a skin disorder that is highly contagious. There is a big complication with molluscum contagiosum, which is that it is often a sexually transmitted disease, but it is just as often not sexually transmitted. Young children often get outbreaks of molluscum contagiosum, because they often touch the sores of children who are already infected with the condition. Adults are more likely to get molluscum contagiosum from sexual activity with an infected person.
Once an adult or a child is infected with molluscum contagiosum, it is a long process before the patient is free of infection. In fact, it may be months or even years before a bad case of molluscum contagiosum is completely cleared up. Molluscum contagiosum is contagious throughout its active cycle, so if you see molluscum contagiosum bumps on someone you can catch the disorder from that person. You would treat molluscum contagiosum with the same care that you would treat a herpes infection or any other venereal disease, even when the case of molluscum contagiosum has not been sexually transmitted.
