Childrens Molluscum

The Childrens Molluscum is mulluscum contagiosum that grows in the skin of children. The Childrens Molluscum is a harmless viral infection of the skin. It causes a rash consisting of crops of firm round pearly white spots one to three mm in size that contain a tiny pit in the centre. Each spot contains a small capsule that is full of cheesy material containing the virus. The rash is often seen on the trunk, buttocks, face and arms.

The Childrens Molluscum virus is spread by person-to-person contact and it takes between two weeks and two months to develop the rash. We commonly see it in children and it is relatively unusual in adults although it can be spread sexually causing spots on the penis, scrotum or vulva and can be a more severe problem when your immune system is compromised. It tends to spread to damaged skin and the spots can become secondarily infected if scratched. The condition resolves on its own after several months.

The Childrens Molluscum will show an individual spots can be pricked to express the contents. This kills the individual spot but if there are many this can be unpleasant for children and it may be best to leave well alone until the body's own immune system clears the infection naturally. The problem tends to worry parents more than the children but they should be discouraged from scratching the spots.

The Childrens Molluscum disease is common and worldwide. It can occur in any age but mostly found in children. The children that loves to go to the swimming pools, communal bathing facilities, shared towels and close contact between children at play are the usual sources of infection. Infection of children via sexual abuse is presumably possible. However, this disease is quite commonly seen on the genital and perineal skin of children. Thus, abuse should not be assumed unless there are other suspicious features.

The Childrens Molluscum can be avoided by providing clean towels for each use. Also spray toilet seats and counters where child uses the bathrooms with disinfectants to kill any molluscum organisms on those surfaces. If possible pull back their covers to expose to sunlight and air dry and give a light spray with disinfectants and do not make the bed until they are about to go to bed.

Other recommendations to avoid Childrens Molluscum includes observing their playmates and neighbors for evidence of molluscum and report your observations to the parents of those children, and then take precautions about limiting physical contact, rough playing with them. The child should get proper rest and nutrition to boast their immune system. If they are in pre-school and taking naps, provide them with their own personal mats and request their teacher to give their mat a quick disinfectant each time of use. Lastly, it is best to teach them aggressive public bathroom hygiene techniques by washing their hands after using the washroom and flushing the toilet bowl before and after use so to avoid Childrens Molluscum.
