Pre cancerous moles can be easily detected if you know the rules. The rules that are referred here are the ABCD rules. The ABCD rules had been expanded to mnemonic ABCDEF criteria that includes the following; Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Elevation and Funny-looking moles. These rules are easy to memorize and are useful tools in distinguishing the early signs of melanoma. As known, melanoma is a rare and very aggressive fatal skin cancer that originates from moles. This type of cancer evolves from the abnormal formations of melanocyte cells (skin coloring pigment) that are caused by variety of risk factor.

The risk factors in developing pre cancerous moles include among others age, heredity and genes, and environmental factor caused by the UV radiation. Pre cancerous moles may evolve from either dysplastic nevi or normal moles that changed its growth. The physical changes in the moles plus other distinguishing signs such as pain, swelling, bleeding and non-healing lesions are very much common features of pre cancerous moles that are potentially linked to melanoma. Dysplastic moles are not cancer moles but may tend to become cancerous if not treated early.

Studies indicate that pre cancerous moles that evolved from dysplastic nevi are most likely to turn into melanoma. It is highly important to have a regular self-examination of the skin for any suspicious dysplastic moles present. Pre cancerous moles that are inherited from the family should be checked regularly. People with unusual looking moles should consider a visit to the dermatologist to find out if the moles are going bad. People who have fair or whiter skin, blue eye or red and blonde hair color are known to be at risk in developing melanoma. Precancerous moles can be triggered when the skin is subjected to intense sun exposure. Sunburns from childhood are major causing factors for someone to develop pre cancerous that will turn to melanoma.

Pre cancerous moles should not linger on the skin freely. These moles should be removed at once. The best way to cure pre cancerous moles is by simple excision. The skin is then brought to the lab for microscopic analysis and if found out to be positive for melanoma then it should be removed. This is done at an early stage to avoid metastasis or its spread to other areas and organs of the body. Once it spread to the lymph nodes, and other major organs the chances of cure diminishes.

With some people having high risk of developing pre cancerous moles as compared to other people, it is important to pay attention in skin protection. The sun’s UVR is the major enemy of the skin and without proper anti-sun protection while outdoors the skin’s DNA will be altered paving a way for developing skin related diseases such as pre cancerous moles. Tanning saloons are also known to be a source of high risk UVR that causes precancerous moles and melanoma. Prevent your skin by using sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, wearing proper clothing and using visors, and sunglasses to protect your eyes is advised.
