Ordinary skin moles are skin spots or pigments caused by concentrations of melanocytes. These ordinary skin moles may be flat or raised and comes in either light or dark tones of red, brown and black and usually rounded. Ordinary skin moles should not be an issue as it linger in the skin without a need for medical attention, however if something goes wrong and these moles tend to change then it becomes a problem.

Unlike ordinary skin moles, dysplastic nevi have uneven borders, rough texture, larger than a pea size and are may have a mixture of more than one color combined with the original color of the moles. The location of the ordinary skin moles may be located in the areas of the body such as the face, hands, upper and lower torso, legs, neck and other unexposed areas such as heels of the feet, breasts, and genital area. The back areas are usually exposed to the sun and may have occurrence of several moles that are suspicious of becoming melanoma.

Ordinary skin moles that appear during birth should not be a problem as long as the changes are stable. If it constantly changes and becomes odd then it could become a problem. Melanoma does not only originate in dysplastic moles but also in ordinary skin moles. Ordinary skin moles also occur in pregnant mothers and in women who are taking birth control pills as a result of hormonal change.
