The pain and embarassment finally got to me, and I researched online and found this product. It quickly... read more (Pam, H-Balm treatment user)

You wake up one morning to the light of a new day, lay there contemplating the day’s task and all the sudden you realize your tongue feels as though tiny little demons had invaded and attacked your tongue with razors in the middle of the night. You jump out of bed and run to the mirror examining the cause and see little ulcers that have erupted in your mouth in the dead of night. Your mind begins racing across the many medical terms that could be the cause of this all consuming pain.

For decades people have been suffering from obnoxious little ulcers that attack the gums and tongue causing intense pain to the sufferer. These obnoxious little intruders are canker sores of the tongue. Canker sores known also by the medical terms "aphthous ulcers" and "aphthae." It can be worrisome if the person suffering has a chronic form. Aphthae can be a sign of serious systemic problems, such as vitamin deficiency, cancer or even infection with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus, which causes AIDS). If you suffer from chronic canker sores of the tongue, it is recommend you see your health care provider immediately. You may even consider a visit to a specialist, dermatologists and ear, nose and throat specialists (ENTs) all of which are knowledgeable with regard to canker sores of the tongue.

A “burning tongue” symptom is known as glossopyrosis. It is important to realize that glossopyrosis is a term that describes a symptom like neuralgia describes pain and is not to be considered a diagnosis. Glossopyrosis, almost always occurs in postmenopausal women. While this could give indication to a strong hormonal connection, studies have shown many women who experience canker sores of the tongue are on appropriate levels of estrogen supplements.

There are many other possible causes of glossopyrosis that should be considered when diagnosing canker sores of the tongue.

B vitamin deficiency. Several of the B vitamins have been implicated, and many people have speculated about deficiencies of other vitamins or minerals, especially folate. It is recommend that the patient who suffers from canker sores take a multivitamin and mineral daily supplement.

Oral yeast infection (thrush). While this is often obvious on examining the mouth, it can, on occasion, be a very subtle infection. Proper diagnosis from a physician is imperative.

Sensitivity to toothpaste, mouthwash or denture-cleaning agents. Most of these substances contain an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate. Some canker sore suffers note great improvement of their symptoms if they eliminate these substances entirely. There are several alternatives that can be considered. You can brush your teeth or dentures with baking soda. Although it isn’t quite as appealing to the taste buds it does do the job quite nicely.

Plummer-Vinson syndrome. This is a group of symptoms related to iron deficiency. It includes anemia, a variety of oral lesions, "spoon-shaped" fingernails and webbing of the esophagus.

Some of the most common found links to canker sores of the tongue are injuries to the inside of the mouth that can be caused by biting or by a foreign object such as toothpicks or aggressive brushing. Viral infections and stress have been linked to canker sores as well due to the affects they have on minimizing your bodies natural immune system.

Genetic predisposition is yet another link. If your mother suffered from canker sores of the tongue you can place a pretty safe bet that your cause is linked to your family genetics. Of course hormonal changes can be tossed in the mix of causes for canker sores of the mouth or tongue simply because when your body begins going through chances, it’s not likely it will change gracefully.

Now that we have a glimpse inside what canker sores actually are, you are probably wondering what is the best way to declare war on these tiny little invaders!

Begin with your diet. Spicy or salty foods, coffee, citrus fruits, or any other foods that may cause discomfort should be avoided. And just like we all learned early on in life, take your time when eating. Chew your food carefully, slowly and completely.

Try using a soft bristle toothbrush should be used when brushing teeth to help reduce the trauma to your gums and tongue that can be caused by hard bristled brushes.

Various habits can help in reducing the pain caused by canker sores of the tongue and mouth, such as Popsicles and cold drinks. These may help ease some of the discomfort and it gives you a nice excuse to indulge in one of those all time favorite childhood treats. The mouth can be rinsed with Mylanta or Maalox every 4 hours. Non-prescription therapeutic products with protectants and topical anesthetics may be applied to ease the pain.

Canker sores are not dangerous they are merely a common nuisance that affect nearly three billion people around the world. Although you may be suffering a great deal of pain caused by these little canker sores on your tongue or mouth, it’s reassuring to know that this too shall pass and will do so soon.
