The medical treatment effects of Lysine or shall we term it therapeutics effects lysine has been an overwhelming topic in the medical history nowadays. There was so much to tell about it. There were many testimonies from the patients themselves but lately contradictions came out because of the complications to some patients too.
Early years of 1970’s, a cracking news that after a research in one of the viral lab of Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, that one of the therapeutic effect lysine was to prevent herpes and cold sores. That was start of how popular, lysine was and has been attracting attention as a possible addition to the fast-growing list of muscle-building nutrients.
First therapeutic effect lysine is, the function as building block for all protein in the body. Since lysine is incorporated into many proteins it then has many role. First, as a building block it barricade the replication of herpes viruses and is therefore often prescribed by doctors to people with cold sores or genital herpes. This is one of the best therapeutic effects of lysine where ninety-six out of one hundred patients with cold sore strongly support the use of lysine.
The lysine as calcium absorber is also one of the best therapeutic effect of lysine. The supplementation has been shown to increase the absorption of calcium and it may reduce its excretion and therefore very relevant to women who after giving birth is losing calcium in their body. Some researchers believe that lysine may be shown to have a role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
The third therapeutic effect lysine which up to present is uncontested that as amino acids it maintains growth, lean body mass, and the body’s store of nitrogen. The production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies is then evident, thus, this keeps our system alive and energetic everyday and helps for a faster recovery from surgery or sports injuries.
There were objections and side effects that are arising now. What was evidently showing as negative therapeutic effect lysine, like abdominal cramps and transient diarrhea have occasionally been reported at very high intakes of 15 - 40 grams? Also the idea that lysine might work against herpes has been questioned as to its truth and reliability. Because in order to replicate, the herpes virus requires arginine. An arginine is also an amino acid obtained from the hydrolysis or digestion of plant and animal protein. But lysine is thought to interfere with the assimilation of arginine in the intestine. That is why there are contradictions and other studies showed that it's still a long way from this observation to a herpes cure, and most studies have been inconclusive.
A small study conducted at the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1984 did show that lysine supplements-1,000 milligrams a day-helped reduce recurrences of cold sores but the study did not include genital herpes. Furthermore, the hepatotropic viruses, measles, and herpes viruses as well as different drugs were repeatedly shown to act presumably as a trigger in patients with autoimmune hepatitis. Further study is being done to cater all these findings.
