The scientific name of genital herpes is Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-2), which is related to the viruses that belongs to the same family of viruses that cause chicken pocks and shingles. The scientific name of genital herpes was derived from the Greek ‘Herpein’, meaning to creep, sneak or crawl. And due to its chronic/latent/recurrent nature the infections comes back again after later provocation and will creep in the body. To date, there are 8 known human Herpes viruses. The family is divided into 3 Sub-families; Alphaherpesvirinae, Betaherpesvirinae, Gammaherpesvirinae. The Simplex virus human herpes virus 1, 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2) belong to the family of Alphaherpesvirinae. The prototype member of the family is Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV with 2 antigenic types, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Man is believed to be the natural host for HSV, but the virus is also capable of infecting various animals.
In Genital herpes (HSV-2), primary infection usually occurs through sexual genital contact with an infected individual and primarily associated with genital and anal lesions. Herpes simplex type 2 viruses can be shed through skin-to-skin contact only, contrary to catching the virus through sharing the same toilet seat with an infected person considering that the virus will not survive longer outside of the human the body. Herpes simplex type 2 type virus is more dangerous and highly contagious that HSV-1. By comparison, it mostly affects sexually active people with unprotected sex and the symptoms could be severe. The sores are more painful and could cause other complications like cervical cancer. It does not spread to other parts of the body unlike herpes simplex type 1. Herpes simplex type 2 could also cause rare cases on neonatal herpes to new born as the result of the infected mother delivering the baby.
The scientific name of genital herpes is frequently using an abbreviation HSV-2. HSV-2 can be treated in several ways depending on the nature of the outbreak, initial or recurrent. The treatment varies from person-to-person depending on the person’s reception of the treatment due to their immune system. HSV- 2 poses a risk of recurrence as a result of immune system deficiency and the outbreaks can be more than one episode a year. For people with compromised immune systems, including people under treatment of cancer, AIDS, depressed, people with unhealthy lifestyle especially those smoking could get trigger the herpes simplex virus to reactivate any time without warning.
The scientific name of genital herpes HSV-2 is mostly used ion the web with links to various sources of information about the disease. Sources say that there is a strong link between herpes simplex type 2 infections and the risk of HIV infection. HSV-2 prevalence is significantly high among HIV positive patients than HIV negative patients. Although Herpes 1 is responsible for only 5- 10 percent of genital herpes, Herpes 2 causes the majority of genital herpes. Herpes 2 can be transmitted through oral or genital secretions. There’s no cure for HSV-2, however there are treatments that will relieve the pain and heal the sores faster. A vaccine is still being studied in its effectiveness in preventing recurrent outbreaks in the futures. Since this herpes 2 vaccine has not been officially out to the general public, the use of Acyclovir and Vacyclovir will be helpful in preventing future outbreaks fin cases of frequent recurrences.
