Lysine

It was proven that the human body cannot produce L-LYSINE and this important amino acid and can only be obtained from food intakes and supplements. Lysine is a well-known essential amino acid. Many foods supply lysine, but the richest sources by far include red meats, fish, and dairy products. Vegetables, on the other hand, are generally a poor source of lysine, with the exception of legumes.
In the 70’s, L LYSINE was identified as prevention for herpes and cold sores. That was in one of the viral lab of Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. Nowadays, L LYSINE has been attracting attention as a possible addition to the fast-growing list of muscle-building nutrients.

First major role and contribution of L-LYSINE is, it’s a necessary building block for all protein in the body. The L LYSINE has many functions in the body because it is incorporated into many proteins, which are used by the body for a variety of purposes. It interferes with replication of herpes viruses and is therefore often prescribed by doctors to people with cold sores or genital herpes. A review of the research trials investigating the effects of lysine on people with cold sores that in a number of one hundred patients, 96 among them confirmed and showed that they strongly support the use of L LYSINE.

The second major role of L-LYSINE is it plays a major role in calcium absorption. The L LYSINE supplementation has been shown to increase the absorption of calcium and it may reduce its excretion. This was seen to be very relevant to women who after giving birth are losing calcium in their body. Some researchers believe that lysine may be shown to have a role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

The third role is that, as amino acids it maintains growth, lean body mass, and the body’s store of nitrogen. In that case, it serves as building muscle protein that keeps our system alive and energetic everyday and helps for a faster recovery from surgery or sports injuries; and lastly, L LYSINE helps the in producing hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.

Although, there were objections and side effects that is arising now. Like abdominal cramps and transient diarrhea have occasionally been reported at very high intakes of 15 - 40 grams. Also the idea that lysine might work against herpes has been questioned as to its truth and reliability. Because in order to replicate, the herpes virus requires arginine. An arginine is also an amino acid obtained from the hydrolysis or digestion of plant and animal protein. But lysine is thought to interfere with the assimilation of arginine in the intestine. That is why there are contradictions and other studies showed that it's still a long way from this observation to a herpes cure, and most studies have been inconclusive. A small study conducted at the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1984 did show that lysine supplements-1,000 milligrams a day-helped reduce recurrences of cold sores but the study did not include genital herpes.
